Joey Dunlop (1952-2000)

Joey Dunlop is universally regarded as the greatest TT rider of all time. The Northern Irishman won an incredible 26 TT races between 1977 and 2000. He also won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1984 and 1985. Dunlop tragically died in a racing accident in Estonia in 2000 at age 48.

Michael Dunlop (1989-present)

Son of the late Joey Dunlop's rival Robert Dunlop, Michael Dunlop has amassed 21 TT wins and is the most successful rider of the modern era. He holds the lap record at 133.4 mph average speed. Notably, Michael has won across multiple classes including Superbike, Superstock, and Supersport.

John McGuinness (1972-present)

From Morecambe, England, John McGuinness won 23 TT races between 1996 and 2018. Nicknamed "The Morecambe Missile," he won the Senior TT seven times (2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2013, 2015). At age 47, he became the oldest rider to win a TT race (2017 Zero White).

Legendary Machines

Ducati 916/996/998

The Ducati 916 series became iconic at the TT, ridden by numerous winners including Michael Rutter and Bruce Anstey. The distinctive desmodromic V-twin engine and trellis frame made it ideal for the Mountain Course.

Honda CBR1000RR

Honda's CBR1000RR powered many winners in the 2000s and 2010s, with Michael Dunlop winning on Honda machinery before switching to BMW and then Ducati.

BMW S1000RR

BMW S1000RR brought modern technology to the TT, with Ian Hutchinson winning five races in 2010 on the BMW before the manufacturer withdrew factory support.

Single Cylinder Race (1000cc)

The premier single-cylinder class featuring modified 1000cc engines producing around 140 hp.

Superbike TT

The blue-ribband event using full 1000cc Superbike-homologated motorcycles with 200+ hp.

Supersport TT

600cc middleweight races, historically very competitive.

Senior TT

The final and most prestigious race, typically decided by seconds.

Zero TT

Electric motorcycle class inaugurated in 2019, showing the future direction of motorsport.

Fatalities and Safety

The TT has seen 146+ rider fatalities since 1907, making it the most dangerous motorcycle racing event in the world. Safety improvements have been ongoing, including Armco barriers, air fences, and medical facilities. However, the basic premise of racing on open public roads remains inherently dangerous.

The Snaefell Mountain Course runs through the mountains and villages of the Isle of Man:
